Photographing children is one of the most rewarding experiences. Their energy, curiosity, and genuine expressions make for some of my favorite sessions, and some of the most beautiful imagery I’ve ever made. As a parent, you want your child’s photos to reflect their unique personality and stage of life. To help ensure your session goes smoothly and feels joyful for everyone involved, I’ve compiled a few tips on how to to prepare your little ones for a photoshoot:
1 . Talk About the Photoshoot Like an Exciting Event
Kids respond well to enthusiasm, so frame the session as something special—like a playdate, a chance to dress up, or a fun adventure. Avoid phrases like “you have to behave” or “be on your best behavior,” as this can add unnecessary pressure. Instead, highlight the exciting parts: “We’re going to play with our friend Claire [or, your photographer’s name] and take some cool pictures!”
Pro tip: If your child is shy, let them “help” by bringing a toy camera so they can feel involved and playful.
2. Dress for Comfort, Personality, and Purpose
Wardrobe choices are key to a cohesive and beautiful shoot. Here are a few specific ideas to guide you:
- Color Palette: Opt for earthy tones, soft neutrals, or pastel shades that won’t clash with natural settings. If you have siblings, choose complementary colors but try to avoid matching outfits.
- Textures Add Interest: Knits, linen, or embroidery add depth to photos without being distracting. A simple detail like a textured sweater or ruffled dress can elevate the look.
- Avoid Distractions: Skip clothing with heavy logos, characters, or neon shades. Instead, lean into timeless, understated pieces that let your child shine.
If you’re still not sure where to start, I have a free, downloadable ‘What to Wear’ resource that can help guide you in the right direction. Otherwise, I’m happy to chat about outfit options during our pre-shoot consultation.
3. Choose the Right Time for Their Rhythm
Timing is everything with kids. Book your session during their happiest time of day—often mid-morning or early afternoon. If they’re not morning people, let them wake up fully before starting. Be mindful of meal and nap schedules; a well-fed, well-rested child is naturally more cooperative and joyful.
Tip: Bring a snack that’s camera-friendly. Think crackers or light-colored, dry snacks that won’t stain their face or hands
4. Make a Playlist of Their Favorite Songs
Music is a wonderful way to set the tone and ease nerves, and a great way to prepare for your kid’s photoshoot. Create a short playlist of their favorite tunes to play during the session. Familiar songs can instantly spark joy and help them feel comfortable. For shy kids, even a simple nursery rhyme can work wonders. If you need one, here’s my go-to kid-friendly playlist I use for my own shoots.
5. Bring a Small ‘Job’ for Them to Do
Kids love feeling important, so give them a task during the session. Maybe they’re in charge of holding a flower, blowing bubbles, or keeping a small prop safe. These moments not only keep their hands busy but also lead to candid, heartfelt photos.
6. Turn Breaks into Play
Children can’t be “on” the entire session, and that’s perfectly okay. Short breaks to run, spin, or explore their surroundings often recharge them—and some of the best shots come during these unscripted moments.
Tip: If you’re shooting in a natural location, let them collect a leaf, rock, or flower they find interesting. It often creates a sweet, unexpected prop and keeps them engaged.
7. Bring a Comfort Item—and Use It Creatively
If your child has a favorite toy or blanket, bring it along. Not only does it help them feel secure, but it can also add a personal, meaningful touch to the photos. For example, a well-loved stuffed animal peeking out of their pocket or a cozy blanket wrapped around them can create images that feel deeply authentic.
8. Celebrate the Unexpected
Tears, giggles, or wiggles—these are part of what makes photographing children so special. If your child gets fussy, take a deep breath and trust that we’ll work through it. Often, those unexpected moments lead to the most memorable, heartfelt photos.
Final Thoughts
Every child is wonderfully unique, and every session is a chance to celebrate that individuality. By focusing on their joy and personality, we’ll create images that not only capture this moment in time but also feel like a reflection of who they truly are.
